The MLB had Mr. October in Reggie Jackson, but in Lubbock we have Mr. Postseason: Kurt Wilson who is our Lubbock Regional MVP.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are Regional Champs once again for the 3rd straight year. They defeated Army, North Carolina, and UCLA this weekend to advance to the Super Regional. The Super Regional will be hosted in Lubbock next weekend. The Red Raiders defeated UCLA last night 8-2 to secure their spot. After a big weekend and some clutch performances, Kurt Wilson has earned Lubbock Regional MVP.
Wilson had sat out for a few games due to a thumb injury. By the way he was hitting this weekend, you wouldn’t have even thought he was injured. Wilson went 5-11 this weekend with three runs, five RBI, and a solo home run.
Wilson’s biggest games this weekend came against North Carolina on Saturday and UCLA last night. Against UNC, he went 2-4, one run, three RBI’s, one home run. His solo home run came at a crucial moment as Tech was trying to extend their lead which at the time was 3-2. Then in the 7th inning, Wilson stepped in and hit a shot down the right-field line. It actually hit off the pole giving him his third home run of the year to give Tech the 4-2 lead. He would come up huge again in the 8th inning when he singled to shortstop, allowing Dillon Carter and Cal Conley to score extending their lead 7-2, and would ultimately pull out the win.
Against UCLA, Wilson would go 2-3, one run, two RBI. Tech was down early 0-1 and then in the top of the 2nd inning, Wilson singled to center field bringing Easton Murrell around to tie the game at one apiece. Later in the game in the 5th inning, as Tech was starting to pull away, Wilson stepped in again and delivered yet another base hit and RBI with a single to right field allowing Nate Rombach to come around and score.
Now I mentioned earlier how Wilson became known in Lubbock as Mr. Postseason back in 2019 when Tech was hosting the Super Regionals against Oklahoma State the series was tied 1-1. Tech had won the first game and lost the second so they were going into a Game 3 with a winner-take-all situation with a chance to go to the College World Series. It was a back-and-forth affair the entire game and then Oklahoma State took a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the 8th inning. Kurt Wilson stepped in and delivered a 3-Run Homerun shot to right-centerfield to give Texas Tech the lead 8-6 which they would end up winning and earning a spot in the CWS.
These two occurrences are what has started to earn Wilson the name of Mr. Postseason because it seems in big stages and clutch situations, he is the guy you want at the plate for Tech to make big-time plays. Texas Tech will certainly need more of that next weekend in the Super Regionals and in the College World Series if they move on. This performance this weekend is the reason why Kurt Wilson has been named Lubbock Regional MVP. Expect more big plays and big performances from Wilson in the future!
