There are 86 days until the Red Raiders take the field against the Houston Cougars. Every day, we will be highlighting a different Red Raider based on their jersey numbers. Today, we will be taking a look at wide receiver Dalton Rigdon.
Talk about a great story, from walk-on to contributor Dalton Rigdon has seen it all! After a stellar career as both a football player and a track athlete, Rigdon walked on to the football team in 2017. He Redshirted that season and only appeared in one game. Rigdon was someone you heard about in post-practice interviews as someone who impressed coaches with his speed and grit. He caught three passes in his redshirt freshman season and then broke out in 2019.
In Matt Wells’ first season, Rigdon made an impact, in more ways than one. Before the season even started, Rigdon was placed on scholarship. He proved he deserved that scholarship early in that season with a six catch, 62-yard performance in the first game of the season followed by a huge five catch, 83-yard performance against UTEP. This included a 49-yard screen pass for a touchdown!
Rigdon played well that season and finished 2019 with 34 catches, 486 yards, and five touchdowns. Going into 2020, Rigdon appeared to be one of the up-and-comers on this roster. Injuries kept Rigdon from having a great season as he only saw action in seven games last season, finishing the season with 13 catches and 133 yards.
Keep your eye on Rigdon this season in a loaded inside receivers group.
