Behren Morton: Texas Tech’s Future QB1

Texas Tech is no stranger to having great QB’s from Kliff Kingsbury, Graham Harrell, and BJ Symons to NFL MVP and Super Bowl Champion Patrick Mahomes. Texas Tech has always been a place for QB’s to thrive and the future looks to be more of the same with the Class of 2021 commit, ESPN Top 300 JR, the 104th ranked player on rivals, and a new Elite 11 invitee, Behren Morton, set to hit the 806. I recently interviewed Behren and asked why he chose Texas Tech, what to expect from the Tech Class of 2021, and what his goals are in his senior season. 

RC: How are you and your family holding up during COVID-19 and this crazy time? Any creative/unique workouts you’ve been doing to better your game?

Behren: This COVID season has been really good for me mentally and physically before we started summer workouts at our school I was working out Monday through Friday at 6:30 a.m. in one of my friend’s garage! I’ve had time to reflect and how to better myself for the upcoming season.

RC: During the recruiting process, there were multiple Power 5 schools that offered you, from USC, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, and Baylor just to name a few. What was it about Texas Tech that made you feel that Lubbock was the best opportunity for you at the collegiate level? 

Behren: I went to visit all the schools and they were all great, but something stood out about Tech. The atmosphere, the fans, and the coaching staff when it was time to make a decision it was easy to pick. 

RC: As a junior, you had an impressive 29 TD passes (6 rushing TD’s) to go along with 3 INT, what are some of your personal goals as well as team goals for your senior season? 

Behren: This year I’m just trying to help the Eastland Mavericks win football games and become the best leader I can be on and off the field. 

RC: Watching your film, you have so many tools in the proverbial toolbox, what do you think are your strengths that you will bring to the 806 in 2021? 

Behren: I think one of my big strengths is leadership and the way I compete on the field. I think it’s better than a lot of other quarterbacks. I can throw from a lot of different angles and fit balls in tight spaces. 

RC: The Big 12 is known for electric offenses, what are you most looking forward to at the collegiate level when competing in the Big 12? 

Behren: One of the reasons I picked Tech, was because of the air raid offense and what Coach Yost does offensively. I think it is the best in the nation. It doesn’t matter where you will play, the Big 12 will always have the best atmospheres and an electric game-day vibe. 

RC: You’ve been very active on social media recruiting others for the Class of 2021, talk about the current class, and what Tech fans can expect from that group?

Behren: The 2021 class at Tech is going to go down as one of the best classes in Tech history. We talk daily and are very close already. 

RC: Do you have a message for Tech fans? 

Behren: Get ready for an electrifying offense that is coming to Texas Tech!! #GunsUp!!
