There’s Patrick Mahomes Days Until Football

There are five days until the Red Raiders take the field against the Houston Cougars, We have been highlighting a different Red Raider based on their jersey numbers. Today, we will be taking a look at former Tech Quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes spent three years at Texas Tech before declaring for the NFL Draft in 2016. I think people are quick to forget sometimes just how good he was even at Tech. It seemed like he was putting up video games numbers each season.

One of his most prolific games came in 2016 when he faced Baker Mayfield and the Sooners, Mahomes had a record-breaking night when he finished the game with 734 passing yards which matched the FBS record and totaled 819 yards offensively. Mahomes had seven touchdowns that game.

Mahomes was also the FBS passing leader that year in college football with 5,052 yards.

What people marvel at about Mahomes is his escape ability to get out of pressure and scramble out of the pocket and deliver dimes downfield. He has made a living off it so far in the NFL avoiding the rush.

Also, another thing he has become known for in the league is his arm strength and how he can chuck the ball 60-yards downfield with little effort and that is what scouts were amazed at with his combine and pro day which allowed him to go in the first round.

That arm strength certainly comes in handy especially when he has a receiver like Tyreek Hill on the other end to be able to just run underneath it so Mahomes can let it fly.

The Kansas City Chiefs shocked the NFL when they decided to take Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He would not see much time his rookie season playing behind Alex Smith, but many believed he would be his successor.

Mahomes will be playing in his 5th season this year, but in the past four he has already put together a resume that would land him in the Hall of Fame today.

He is a three-time Pro Bowler (2018-2020), and in 2018 he was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, First Team-All Pro, and was the NFL passing touchdowns leader.

In 2019 Mahomes led the Chiefs to their franchise’s second super win in Super Bowl LIV over the San Francisco 49ers. He would also be named Super Bowl MVP.

That offseason, the Chiefs offered Mahomes the contract of a lifetime and one that will be talked about for years to come. They offered him a 10-year extension worth $450 million that could be worth up to $503 million. This secured his future with the team all the way through 2031.

Mahomes also claimed the top spot in this years’ Top 100 Players of 2021. This is strictly voted by the players who decided he was best in the league last year.

He finished the season with a 66.3% completion, 4,740 yards, 38 TDs, and a 108.2 QB rating. He also led them to another division title as well as a conference championship and a Super Bowl Appearance.

We love Mahomes here in Lubbock and whenever he wins we all win as Red Raiders. He will seek a 3rd straight Super Bowl appearance this year as the Chiefs are one of the favorites for the AFC Championship.
