Both teams played yesterday, both won, but each team is in a different position going into game 2 of the Lubbock Regional. Texas Tech used three pitchers yesterday, but two of them are eligible to pitch today if needed. North Carolina is coming off an upset of sorts against the No. 2 seeded UCLA Bruins in a hotly contested game that went down to the wire.
The Tar Heels used arguably their two best pitchers last night in ace Austin Love and closer Gage Gillian. We could potentially see Gillian again in a starting role, according to their coach. The other pitcher we could see starting out for the Tar Heels tonight is Connor Ollio. This according to UNC Head Coach Scott Forbes. Gillian pitched one inning last night and got the save for the Tar Heels. He is 1-2 on the season with a 2.06 ERA and zero starts on the year.
Ollio has only started twice for the Tar Heels and has only pitched 31 innings over 19 appearances for the team. He currently has a 2-2 record with a 3.69 ERA. I don’t believe either will go more than three or maybe four innings but I believe you see both of these pitchers tonight.
On the Red Raider side, Patrick Monteverde should get the start. Coach Tadlock will use the opposite approach as the other coach and let Monteverde go six or even seven innings if need be. Nobody is sure who will relieve Monteverde, but my best guess is Ryan Sublette.
This is crucial game for the Red Raiders, they can give themselves a bit of a cushion going into the championship round of this Regional on Sunday with a win!
