This is the finale of our Men’s Basketball Returners Series! We conclude with one of the biggest presences on this team in Marcus Santos-Silva.

Originally from Massachusetts, Santos-Silva chose VCU for his college career while in high school. He made his mark in three seasons in a Ram Uniform, averaging double figures in points and over seven rebounds per game in both his sophomore and junior seasons. He then transferred to Texas Tech.

Santos-Silva was brought in by the former Head Coach (who shall remain nameless) to play the center position. Last season, he averaged 8.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. His play got better as the season went on as got more comfortable playing against Big 12-caliber players. His offensive rebounding is something that most people recognized about him this season.

Offense

Santos-Silva’s post skillset is very polished and I think with a more modern offense, he’ll be able to shine. This is especially if those around him have more opportunities to score. Unfortunately, a ton of the offense last season was to just throw the ball into Santos-Silva and have him make things happen. That is just not his game. He’s much better when he’s moving, making ball screens, and running to the rim. With Coach Peery’s updated offense, I believe Santos-Silva can thrive.

Defense

Defensively, Santos-Silva will still be a force. His bulky frame allows for him to guard taller athletes with his strength and wingspan. He’s also incredibly athletic and can get in passing lanes and block shots. There may be some rotations this season where Santos-Silva will play the power forward spot and not the center position he has played for the better part of four seasons.

Overall, Santos-Silva is a crucial member of the Red Raider Basketball Program. He will start this season and might even be a team captain. This is due to his experience and leadership on and off the court. He helps direct players on the defensive end of the court and will make a difference in the Big 12 this season!
