There’s Mason Tharp Days Until Football

There are 80 days until the Red Raiders take the field against the Houston Cougars. Every day, we will be highlighting a different Red Raider based on their jersey number. Today, we will be taking a look at Tight End Mason Tharp.

Tharp is a tight end out of Klein, Texas, but by looking at him, you might think he’s in Lubbock to play basketball rather than football. At 6’8″, he stands out above a crowd. Tharp had a celebrated high school career where he caught 12 touchdowns in his junior season. That may not seem elite but he only caught the ball 30 times that season!

He was one of the top tight end prospects out of the state of Texas and was recruited by many Power-5 schools but picked Texas Tech. Coming into this season, Tharp will have to work his way to reps as the tight end room is arguably the most crowded with talent between returners Austin Koontz and John Holcomb and a slurry of freshman.

I think Tharp will develop into a good receiving tight end for the Red Raiders and might even line up on the outside a but as his career progresses. With his size, it’s very hard to defend him.
