The Red Raiders have one of the nation’s most experienced running back rooms. Between power-backs Sarodorick Thompson and Tahj Brooks, the Red Raiders have a two-headed monster in the backfield. Two younger backs are also ready to prove their worth at the college level. Here is the breakdown of the running back position:
Starters: Sarodorick Thompson, Tahj Brooks
There can indeed only be one starting running back, but both of these guys will see starter-like carries this season. Thompson battled through injuries last season and still rushed for 500 yards, 10 touchdowns, and even chipped in over 100 yards receiving. Brooks stepped up nicely to fill in for Thompson, rushing for 568 yards and 7 touchdowns last season. The two will split most of the carries this season.
Backups: Cam’Ron Valdez, Bryson Donnell, Blake Bedwell
Valdez was the only other current running back on the roster who received carries last season. He’ll most likely receive any other carries not had by Thompson or Brooks. Bedwell is an SMU transfer that will be crucial on special teams but might get a carry or two around the goal line.
Donnell is a ⭐⭐⭐ incoming freshman. Not sure where he fits into this backfield quite yet but he has the talent to make some noise this season as well!
