Red Raiders Fall to Rice in Their First Loss of the Season

Tech opened as the visiting team in game one of the Shriners College Classic against the Rice Owls. Game one opened as a pitching dual between Brendan Girton and Parker Smith, neither team scoring a run until the fourth inning. Rice started the scoring in game one in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to put the Owls up 2-0.

Girton went for 4.1 innings and recorded 5 strikeouts on the day before Josh Sanders came in in relief and successfully got Tech out of the inning without allowing a run. Neither team scored again until the Red Raiders put two across after loading the bases in the top of the 7th, Drew Woodcox scored from third on a wild pitch and Hudson White scored on a sac fly from Tracer Lopez. Andrew Devine was brought in to pitch in the bottom of the 7th and after recording a strikeout allowed the second Rice home run of the day giving the Owls back the lead at 3-2. The Red Raiders failed to score again and suffered first loss of the season.

Errors are still an issue for this Red Raider team, they recorded two in game one of the Shriners Classic and their first loss of the season. The bats struggled to get hot against the Rice pitchers. The Red Raiders next face Michigan tomorrow at 11.
