Why Barret Peery Should Be the Next Texas Tech Head Basketball Coach

With the recent resignation by previous Head Coach, Mark Adams, the Texas Tech basketball program is now on the hunt for a new face to lead next year’s team. One promising candidate in the prospective hire field is former Associate Head Coach Barret Peery. Between his seasoned coaching resume and excellent relationship with players, recruits, and fans, Peery certainly made a name for himself despite his short time in Lubbock.

Coaching Resume

Since his career began, Peery now has over 25 years under his belt of coaching in some capacity. He began his coaching career at his alma mater of Southern Utah as a Graduate Assistant Coach in the 1995-1996 season. Peery then bounced around a few smaller schools as an Assistant Coach until he landed his first head coaching position at the College of Southern Idaho, where he served as Head Coach from 2005-2008. While there, Coach Peery sported an impressive 85-19 overall record. In the 2014-2015 season, he landed his first Division 1 coaching position when he served as an Assistant Coach for Arizona State University. Following his time with ASU, Peery then became the Associate Head Coach for Santa Clara, then subsequently became the Head Coach for Portland State. Peery served in the head coaching capacity for four years at Portland State, finishing his time with a 63-57 overall record. It was in the 2021 off-season that he accepted the Associate Head Coach position at Texas Tech, where he would remain for one year before taking an assistant coaching job at UNLV prior to the start of the 2022-2023 season.

Relationships

While in Lubbock, Peery was known to have excellent relationships with both the current players and recruits as well. He helped recruit current Red Raider Lamar Washington as well as soon-to-be Red Raider Drew Steffe, two players with whom he established very strong connections.

In addition to his relationship with recruits, Peery was also a team and fan favorite during his time with Texas Tech. Being extremely active and vocal on social media quickly earned the hearts of many within Red Raider Nation. Peery seemed to be constantly encouraging and uplifting both the players and fan base on socials, which seemed to be such a valuable asset to the overall team morale while he was in Lubbock.

Being that he already has an established relationship with not only the people of Lubbock but with the city itself as well, a return to Texas Tech seems it would be a no-brainer in this situation.

Play Style

Peery employs an up-tempo style of play, which is very popular in today’s basketball landscape. Lots of shooting, and a ton of full-court pressure.
