Texas Tech is set to kick off its 2020 campaign this coming up Saturday, September 12th, against Houston Baptist at Jones AT&T Stadium. This 2020 season will be like no other and the lead up to has been nothing short of the same. Tech recently released their first depth chart of the season and a few details stood out.

Week One Texas Tech Depth Chart

The first noticeable detail that stood out was the offensive line and how the puzzle came together. The right side of the line for Tech will be a handful for opposing defenses, but the left side does have some question marks. Two sophomores will be starting on Bowman’s blindside. The sheer size of those guys shouldn’t go unnoticed as well as both are over 6’5 and at least 315 lbs. Seeing how quickly they can acclimate to start will be huge for Tech and the success of the offense in 2020.

Another key detail that stood out on the offensive side of the football was the or between McIvor and Colombi at the backup QB spot. There was some talk that McIvor could compete for the starting job against Bowman before camp started, but Bowman won the job in a runaway or so it seems. It’ll be interesting to see who is listed as the backup QB as the season progresses.

On the defensive side, seeing Colin Schooler as a starter after being on campus for a week was a bit of a shock. He is talented and has been named to a First Team All-PAC 12 by the AP during his time in Arizona. He will add even more depth to an already talented LB group for the Red Raiders.

The second detail on defense that stood out was the second CB position. Frye wasn’t listed as a starter, but that is because McPherson was ahead of him, but McPherson will play primarily in the slot. Frye will play on one side of the field, the real question is who plays opposite of him. Hogan, Taylor-Demerson, and Ingram are all listed as starters opposite Frye at the moment. This will be a spot to watch against Houston Baptist on Saturday to see who asserts themselves into a position at a chance to be in the starting role moving forward.
