Way Too Early Roster Outlook for the 2021-2022 Texas Tech Red Raiders Basketball Team

The press conference from Mark Adams shined a light on many aspects of the Red Raiders’ future. One of the main things the presser told us was that Marcus Santos-Silva would be returning along with Avery Benson, Chibuzo Agbo, Clarence Nadolny, Kyler Edwards, and Kevin McCullar. The status of any other player with the program last season is still in the air. I am now going to be projecting the roster for next season’s team with some guessing involved (obviously).

As of right now, three starters and one role player are returning from last season’s team. With the development of Agbo, I will consider him a rotational player as well. That means two starters and two to three role players will need to be added this offseason. In theory, all of the players from last season’s team could return. I don’t think that will happen but I do think that most of them could. I predict either Mac McClung or Terrence Shannon Jr. will return next season. One of them will test the NBA Draft, the other will most likely return. That leaves us needing one starter and a couple of role players.

I think that starter will be in the form of incoming recruit Jaylon Tyson. Nothing is set in stone yet of course but rumors are he’s choosing between following Coach Beard to Austin or staying committed to Texas Tech and Mark Adams. My gut feeling on this one is that he will stay committed to the Red Raiders. He fits in great at a guard spot and could fill the role left by Micah Peavy (if Peavy chooses not to return).

Speaking of Peavy, I am not sure what his decision will be on coming back. Our hoops insiders tell me that Michigan is going after him. I’ve also heard that Coach Adams is considering hiring his dad as an assistant coach. I’m torn on whether or not he’ll be back, but I’ll say for the moment he leaves. Jamarius Burton could also be a returner to get in the mix. He struggled mightily this season but could get another chance under Adams.

This ultimately means most of the newcomers to this team will either be prospect freshman or mid-level transfers coming to come off the bench. No one knows the status of Vlad Goldin or Tyreek Smith at present time but getting a transfer that could play back-up to Marcus Santos-Silva is a must. Qudus Wahab might be a bit of a reach since he had a huge role on an NCAA Tournament team in Georgetown. Ira Lee is an interesting player in my eyes as he hasn’t done a whole lot at Arizona but has gotten consistent playing time since his freshman year.

This roster is in a state of flux at the moment. The outlook is good. Many players from last year’s team will be back and with a couple of solid transfers, this team could be in contention again. Who Coach Adams brings in as his coaching staff will affect the transfer market for the Red Raiders. The staff will need to focus heavily on filling the holes in this roster and bringing Texas Tech back to the forefront!
