There’s 87 days until the Red Raiders take the field against the Houston Cougars. Every day, we will be highlighting a different Red Raider based on their jersey numbers. Today, we will be taking a look at tight end John Holcomb.

Holcomb will be coming into this season as a sophomore. He was a true freshman last season and quickly impressed coaches with that 6’5 frame of his, and impressed them enough he earned the No. 2 tight end coming out of preseason camp last year. He appeared in all 10 games last season with his only start coming in the last game of the year against Kansas. He was one of four true freshmen to earn a start last season. He caught 6 balls for 42 yards on the season and made quite an impact on special teams.

He was rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals. Holcomb was ranked as the No. 28 tight end in the 2020 class by ESPN. There was already a link between Holcomb and Texas Tech because his former teammate at Wellington High School Trevor Roberson having committed to Tech a year earlier. He had an impressive high school career as a tight end and a defensive lineman. So, Holcomb is obviously a very versatile athlete and should look to make a huge impact next season.

With the additions of Jed Castles, Mason Tharp, and Jayden York, he will certainly need to prove he can be in the rotation for the starting tight end spot. Holcomb’s in-game experience should give him a little bit of an edge. I think Wells and Cumbie will have difficult decisions to make come the fall when it comes to this group, but I feel Holcomb can earn himself a spot and make a huge difference on this team. Make sure to watch out for him in the preseason and if he does get his shot, how much of a difference-maker I believe he can be on the field.
