There are 82 days until the Red Raiders take the field against the Houston Cougars. Every day, we will be highlighting a different Red Raider based on their jersey number. Today, we will be taking a look at Wide Receiver Nehemiah Martinez.
As a Lubbock native, Martinez is exactly where he wants to be. His journey is an interesting one and we really hope he gets a chance to show how talented he is on the field in due time. Martinez is one used to waiting. After standing out at New Deal High School, he transferred to Lubbock Cooper where he was forced to sit for a season in 2018. In his 2017 season at New Deal, Martinez totaled over 2,000 yards rushing.
In 2019, Martinez balled out. He garnered National Attention from colleges around the country. In 2019 and 2020, he was named District MVP and was even rated a two-star prospect by Rivals. Not many Division One colleges came knocking but the Air Force did. Martinez committed to Air Force and enrolled in their prep school when he decided to re-open his commitment.
He chose Texas Tech, a school where he has walked-on and will have to earn everything he gets. At 5’9″, he’ll play the inside receiver position for Coach Wells. He is electric in the open field and I believe in a couple years’ time, he could make an impact for the Red Raiders!
