Newcomer Profile: Saga Ukkonen

Saga Ukkonen is an exciting addition to the Lady Raiders and Coach Gerlich’s already stacked roster. Ukkonen joins the Lady Raiders after playing the past three seasons with Helsinki’s FBA Märsky club team all the way from Finland!

Ukkonen is a strong guard, averaging 8.8 points, 1.5 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game, during the 2019-20 season. While playing with the Helmi Capitals, she helped lead the team to deep runs in the U19 Finnish Championship the last three seasons, finishing second the past two seasons. In 2015, she helped push her team to a third-place finish at the U16 Finnish Championship. During the 2016-17 season, Ukkonen helped guide her team to the U19 Finnish Championship title.

Ukkonen has tons of experience on the competition level, I can see her fitting into the Lady Raiders perfectly. In 2018 and 2019, Ukkonen was a part of two WU 18 Nordic Championship teams. In 2016, she finished second at the WU16 Nordic Championship. She has also represented Finland at the Nordic and European Championships.

It is no secret that Ukkonen has a tremendous amount of competition experience. I am excited to see all the talent, experience, and skills she will bring to the Lady Raider basketball team.
