Over the past four days, the Red Raider Soccer team kicked off their 2021 campaign in a strong fashion. They started their hot streak on Thursday with the season opener win versus the UTEP Miners.
The game was close until the 36th minute when the Red Raiders were on the counter after UTEP nearly scored. On the break, freshman defender Macy Blackburn made a perfect cross pass to senior forward Kirsten Davis, who then kicked it in for Texas Tech. This was the only goal of the day. The final score was 1-0, and the Lady Raiders clinched their first win of the season.
The Red Raiders’ second game came on Sunday against UC San Diego. Unfortunately, they had to travel to California, so they didn’t have the luxury of home crowd advantage. The game was slow out of the gate. UC San Diego struck first in the 65th minute when Kennedy Carter got them on the board. This goal was not enough to keep the Red Raiders from losing only the season’s second game. In the 70th minute, the Red Raiders finally got on the board with a goal from junior forward Macy Schultz. The game ended in a 1-1 tie putting the Raiders at 1-0-1 on the season.
Overall, the Red Raiders started the season strong; they just have to keep the momentum going. If you want to catch the soccer team in action, the next game will be Thursday, August 26th, against Hartford in a home game in Lubbock!
