There are 67 days until the Red Raiders kick off the 2021 season. Every day, we will be highlighting a different Red Raider based on their jersey numbers. Today, we will be taking a look at defensive lineman Blake Burris.
Burris joins a defensive line corps that does return 2 of 3 starters from the 2020 season. Originally a 3-star prospect, Burris achieved all-state recognition with some great production. According to 247 Sports, his breakout season as a sophomore produced 72 tackles, three tackles for loss, one INT, and one forced fumble. As a junior, Burris recorded 85 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and five sacks. He also picked off one pass and forced two fumbles.
He had originally committed to the Air Force Academy in 2020 in which he attended the prep school for one year. Burris decided to transfer to Lubbock with the hopes of bolstering the depth of the defensive line. Burris was already very familiar with the Texas Tech program. Not only did he take an unofficial visit in 2019, but his brothers also played under Coach Mike Leach from 2005-2009. The freshman has a great frame to really grow into (6’5”, 280 lbs), and has the opportunity to develop behind a defensive line that returns 81% of its tackling production from 2020.
